BAE Systems Maritime: Designing a Mobile App for 600+ Naval Engineers

As a Principal UX Consultant at BAE, I led the design of a mobile application for the Maritime division, intended for over 600 Naval engineers who work on ship maintenance.

RolePrincipal UX Consultant

MethodsField research, Personas, User journeys, IA, Wireframes, Iterative testing

FocusProductivity tools, Mobile UX, Operational efficiency

SectorMaritime Engineering, Defence, Maintenance & Logistics

The Challenge

BAE Systems needed to equip over 600 maritime engineers at Portsmouth Naval Base with a modern mobile solution. These engineers handled inspections, repairs, and coordination tasks across ship systems and dock operations.

The existing tools were fragmented and paper-based. Our goal: design a simple, intuitive mobile experience to improve day-to-day efficiency and reduce operational bottlenecks.

My Role

Working as part of a small cross-functional team, I was responsible for:

  • Planning and conducting user research
  • Mapping out the user community and key workflows
  • Creating personas and user journeys
  • Designing the IA and wireframes for key flows
  • Running iterative testing with engineering staff
  • Presenting concepts and facilitating stakeholder buy-in

The Outcome

The app empowered engineers to complete key workflows more quickly and with fewer errors — improving productivity and communication across the base.

  • Replaced outdated manual processes with digital clarity
  • Improved engagement through research-led design
  • Praised internally as a model for future digital tooling

Feedback

“Thanks to the user-centered design approach, BAE AI were able to really get under the skin of our users and bring them along the journey.
I’m sure we wouldn’t have had the same results or engagement with a top-down approach.”
— Glen Turnbull, Programme Lead, BAE Systems Maritime

What I’m Proud Of

This project was a reminder that simple, focused tools can have huge impact — especially when designed with the people who use them every day.
It also validated how fast you can move when research and delivery are aligned.
