Speaking and Training

Sam is an active UX speaker and trainer. He enjoys sharing insights on human-centred design – from conference stages to internal workshops – to educate and inspire others. He has delivered talks at international conferences in London and the US, and he coaches teams in UX through custom training courses.

“Opening the Door” (Devcon)

Why is bad design so persistent — and what can we do about it? In this story-driven talk, Sam shares how one door in Houston became a metaphor for human-centred design done right. Through practical examples, he breaks down how multidisciplinary teams at Cognite avoid “Norman doors” by embedding real users in the process, embracing rapid ethnography, and aligning product roadmaps with lived experience.

“Ethics of UX for Good” (City, University of London)

This talk explores the ethical implications of attempting to ‘design for good’ in complex environments where unintended consequences are likely. Presented at the Human-Computer Interaction Design Open Day (City, University of London, 2019).

“UCD vs Homer Simpson Design” (Nerd Summit)

A light-hearted look at design philosophy: comparing ‘Homer Simpson design’ (ad-hoc, intuition-led) versus true user-centred design. Sam delivered this talk at Nerd Summit (University of Massachusetts, 2019), where he shared the stage with UX expert Jared Spool.

Training & Workshops

Sam has created and led regular training courses for design, business analysis, and data teams to spread human-centred design practices within organizations.
